Sophomore Kenia Estrada battles for the ball. This same tenacity assisted her to score the game winning goal in the third minute of play. June Jordan School of Equity makes history by beating Marshal High School 2-0 in CIF-SF AAA soccer action on Crocker Amazon #2 in San Francisco. The game is currently June Jordan's longest winning streak in its short three year history at two games.
Wow! WE did it. June Jordan School of Equity finally has a winning streak. Ok, so it is only two games but we are celebrating the positives!
June Jordan Jaguars (3-7) utilized an open game against cross division Marshall Phoenix (2-7) to build their team unity. Open game? Yeah, the opponent started the game with eight players. We started with seven because of recent tardiness and practice truancy. But the benched players understood and waited patiently on the bench, ok, not so patient but I don’t think they we will make those mistakes again.
As for the game. We scored in the third minute. It was a random 1 v 3 breakaway with sophomore sensation Kenia Estrada. She feinted one defender, juked another and with poise found the back of the net with a skillfully slotted ball to the back of the net. 1-0! History is looking like it might happen.
And then after 15 minutes, we evened the playing field with eight versus eight.
Moments later, Marshal added a ninth player. We followed suit. And that left us with one sub on the sidelines. It was nice to have a sub. Take a player out, discuss a tactical situation and put them back into the game. Brilliant. No wonder Mission, Lowell, and Washington are experiencing such great success!
Growing up playing the beautiful game, my coaches always had us play either equal or at most one more player than the opposition (if they were notably better). Never would I think to play 11 players versus their starting seven. Of course, only having ten healthy players made that decision easy for my coaching staff (me and Assistant Coach Joselle Gacusan). We still have a month to play and injuries are a concern. Not only did I maximize resting some players, discipline, but for sake of the game, I kept it even. I wanted to see who could play better soccer today! It showed and some great soccer was the result. The girls from both teams really began to enjoy the whole game. Smiles abounded and both teams were in it to the end. With the tough season against experienced squads, these two inexperienced teams learned a lot.
Anyways, that’s all I will say about that.
More to come on the “sportsmanship” and the referee that officiated the game.
