Business Portraits: Headshot or Environmental Portrait?

But what is an environmental portrait versus a headshot? Isn’t a portrait a portrait? Just smile and click?

A portrait is portrayal, representation, depiction, impression, account of an individual. Specifically, a headshot is a portrait typically taken from the sternum up. The head and shoulders may be visible and a clean background is utilized such as a backdrop or clear wall space in an office. Usually, insurance agents use these. No offense to the agents, but the images lack flair and insight to the individual that an environmental portrait (EP) will offer.

Now what is an EP you ask? Great question! Here are a few environmental portraits I made while freelancing for the San Francisco Examiner.

Portraits: Business People – Images by Jason Steinberg

An EP is a portrait made of the full body or waist up in the subjects office or workplace. Objects or symbols are included but not overpowering the subject in the background and/or foreground to give you a greater insight of what that individual does or is about. Besides, we are making an environmental portrait of you, my client.

My pricing for Headshots:

“Even though they might lack flair, I still love to make these for the challenge of giving them flair as simply as possible!”

$225 for one individual
$175/person for 2-4 people
$150/person 5-9 people
$125/person 10 or more

These prices are good for three years of usage rights for your company’s website, social media outlets, and other inter-business communications such as but not limited to annual reports or guest speaker engagements.

My pricing for Environmental Portraits:

EP Package- $275
-It is a 45min session.
-Light retouching of the selected images
-One licensed image.
